Raymond A. Carter

Head Coach /

Offensive Coordinator

Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, Coach Carter has football experience at all levels of the game. He is a graduate of Crenshaw High School ('07), where he excelled as a standout running  back. He went on to play for UCLA('08-9) and Colorado State ('10-'11). His NFL experiences as a rookie free agent are with the Jaguars and the Packers

     

He brings with him 9 years of coaching experience, 3 years as a head coach at Diego Rivera High School (Los Angeles) and most recently, as a running back coach for LB Poly ('19). 

​

In his first year as Torrance High School's Head Coach, Coach Carter led the Tartars to a positive 3-2 record for the shortened 2021 Spring Season.

​

Coach Carter comes from a big family of 3 sisters and 2 brothers. When he's not watching football, you can catch him at a concert or a bowling alley.

Alex Bentrem

OFFENSIVE LINE

From Downey, CA, Coach Alex Bentram played G/C for Warren HS. He coached 4 years at Warren High School. 3 of those years were as the Freshman Offensive Line Coach. The other year was as the Varsity Tight Ends Coach. Coach Alex's time at Warren was spent coaching under Long Beach Poly Legend, Coach Raul Lara. In 2019, he coached at Long Beach Poly as the Freshman Offensive Line Coach. He was also instrumental on Game Day Fridays, coaching in the box at games, communicating with the offensive coaches, and working with the OC to help with play calls.

​

When he isn't coaching, he is working towards a Math Education degree from CSULB to be completed Fall '20. 

​

In his own words: 

"I honestly and truly love working with a bunch of like minded individuals towards a common goal. I believe this is why Torrance High School has called my name and I see a very bright future here for this program."

mike cortez

running backs

Coach Mike comes to Torrance with playing experience at Carson High School and Santa Barbara City College. Prior to Torrance, Coach Cortez has coached at Carson High School. He has an associate's degree from LA Harbor and says coaching football is all about the kids.

Joe Kamphuis

Wide Receivers

Coach Joe  has been a coach with Torrance High since 2016. He has played football for Torrance HS and Santa Monica College. He is a Torrance High alum ('02), and has a Radio, Television, and Film degree from Cal Sate Fullerton. His wife is a teacher at Fern Elementary (TUSD), and they have a son, Troy. Coach Joe also coaches baseball for THS.

daniel j. prothro

Assistant head coach

Coach Prothro is an 11 year Staff Sergeant in The United States Marine Corps based out of Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach where he serves as a Logistics Chief.

       

Prior to Torrance High,  Coach Prothro was the DB/WR coach for Diego Rivera High School ('16-'19), and most recently, a DB coach for LB Poly ('19-'20). In addition to coaching football, Coach Prothro also coaches baseball. While at Diego Rivera HS. he served as JV Baseball Head Coach ('16) and Varsity Baseball Head Coach ('17-'19). On top of all that, he is an 8-year Varsity basketball coach. 

     

A triple-threat athlete and coach, Coach Prothro has playing experience at Benedict College ('07-'08), and is a fan of the Lakers, Dodgers, and Rams. He has one daughter, Kennedy.

jason Rudison

Defensive Coordinator/db

Coach "J Bo" Rudison, a native of Los Angeles who played for Dorsey High School ('00) brings a wealth of coaching experience to Torrance High School: Diego Rivera LC (2017-2019), Locke High School (2016), Compton High School (2015), Jordan High School (Los Angeles) (2012), Compton High School (2008-2011), Compton Jaguars (Semi-Pro) (2007), Centennial (Compton) (2007), and Paramount High School (2004-2005).  

​

Off the field, Coach J Bo has competed in the 2004 Olympic Trials in 100m. He is the 1999 CIF L.A. City champion and meet record holder in 400m relay as well as the 1999 CIF state champion in 1600m relay.  In 2000, was a Community College All-American in 100m. He is the father of two children Jason and London Rudison.

BRYANT HENSON

FROSH/SOPH OC

Varstiy qb

Coach Henson has come back home. A Torrance native, and a former player for Torrance HS ('89- '92), Coach Henson was most recently the JV Head Coach for San Marcos HS (2019), and the Frosh Head Coach for San Marcos HS (2018). 

​

Coach Henson has competed in martial arts, golf, and Outrigger paddling, but says "nothing compares to being part of a football team."

Dr. J. Charlie Deutsch

Defensive line

Dr. J. Charlie Deutsch ('02) followed his brother Derek's ('99) footsteps, finding success at THS in football and track-and-field. Coach Charlie was recruited to play defensive tackle at Colorado State but ended up taking an offensive guard position at Dartmouth College where he started as a freshman. He walked on to the track team, throwing the weight and hammer. After college, Charlie was accepted to the University of Illinois where he completed a dual degree program earning his doctorate (veterinary medicine) and masters degrees (public health - biostatistics and epidemiology).
 
Coach Charlie jumped at the opportunity to return to THS to coach the defensive line and is excited to build Tartar pride.

Robert Zuliani

Linebackers

Born and raised in San Pedro, Coach Zuliani attended Mary Star High School.  He graduated from CSU Dominguez Hills.  2021 will be his 23rd season coaching football, his 11th at THS.  In addition to coaching at Torrance, he has coached at Mary Star and Miraleste High schools.  In the past, he has been the head coach of freshmen and JV teams,  and offensive and defensive line coach. He is a member of the Torrance High faculty since 2003, where he teachers social sciences. On top of that, he is also the Academic Decathlon coach and Tartar Knights sponsor.
